Obituary

Melvin J. Peffley, 93, of Hummelstown, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, in the M. S. Hershey Medical Center.
Born in Hanoverdale on October 1, 1925, he was the son of the late John H. and Ruth A. Bell Peffley.
Melvin retired from the Hershey Chocolate Company, and the former Olmsted Air Force Base, Middletown. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II. Melvin was a member of the Hershey Wood Trotters, American Legion Post 265, Hummelstown, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3502, Hershey, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #410, and Middletown Anglers’ & Hunters’. He enjoyed camping and fishing.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Alveretta Reitz Peffley, on April 17, 1997, a grandson, Timothy Gutshall, a sister, Arlene Derr, and a brother, Richard Peffley.
He is survived by a daughter, Dolores Gutshall wife of Harold of Harrisburg; a grandson, John Gutshall of Harrisburg; two great grandchildren, Jessica Palevo wife of Christopher of Lebanon, and Zachery Gutshall husband of Nicole of Harrisburg; and one great great grandson, Greyson Gutshall of Harrisburg.
Private services with military honors were held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Hummelstown Food Bank, c/o Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 West Main Street, Hummelstown, PA 17036.

Mr. Peffley was a sweet man. He would sit on his front stoop and raise his hand in a friendly greeting every time I would walk by. His smile will be missed.
