Obituary for Sharon L. Malasics (English)

Sherri Malasics, also known as Mom, Big Sister, Aunt Sheesh and Trivia Queen (TQ) – a giver of huge hugs, warm smiles, kind notes, perfect gifts and timely pep talks – left this world too soon on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at the Hershey Medical Center. She was 67.

Born in Hershey, the first daughter of Patricia English and the late Richard English, Sherri spent the last years of her life in her usual selfless way, devoted to caring for her mother. She studied education at Millersville University, and while she chose hospital administration over the classroom, she was always a teacher. She taught her son to be curious and kind, open-minded and empathetic. She taught her brother and sisters to love reading and learning new things. And she helped teach the community in her role as program director of the Eye School, the Med Center Ophthalmology Department’s annual outreach event.

Sherri painted, crafted jewelry, sang soprano, crushed crossword puzzles, read voraciously, hollered joyfully at Penn State football games and made a mean snickerdoodle. Her laugh was loud and contagious, and it echoes even as we mourn her absence. Her wit survives, too, in the stories we’ll never forget. And her kindness endures in the example we follow.

Sherri leaves behind her son, Brian Malasics of Washington, D.C., and his partner, Kelsey Landes; her mother, Patricia; her siblings, Kathleen Farrell of Texas, wife of Jim Farrell, David English of Frederick, Md., and Nancy Steinhart of Hershey, with her partner, John Moore; her nieces and nephew, Jessica, Molly, Erica and Patrick; and her great nephew and niece, Robbie and Rebecca.

A celebration of Sherri’s life will be held on Thursday, November 14, at 4 p.m. in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. Visitation at the funeral home will start at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sherri’s memory may be directed to support Ophthalmology Education and Research at the Penn State Eye Center. Please make checks payable to Penn State University. Gifts may be mailed with a memo indicating that this gift is in memory of Sherri Malasics to University Development, Attn: Owen Thomas, 1249 Cocoa Avenue, P.O. Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033-0852.

We were so sorry to read in the Hummelstown Sun of Sharon's death. We had gone to school together and were good friends, but lost contact after high school. Be assured of our prayers for you as you grieve her death - she was a good friend and I have many good memories of times spent with her.
